Week of 5/1/17 - 5/5/17


Happy May!! Thank you to all the families who came to our Open House last night; we had a wonderful turnout! I was listening to some of the students present their work and it really touched me.  They are so proud of their accomplishments!   I’ve attached some pictures of the “before” in and outside our classroom at the end of this blog.
Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:   New spelling words going home on Monday.  The Menu homework is due on or before May 12.  Please make sure your child does his/her activities on a sheet of notebook paper!  


Reading & Language Arts:  We are continuing  The One and Only Ivan.  We’ll be focusing on continuing the reading and discussion using our Ivan packets.
We will also be starting our pen pal letters to our second grade pen pals.  Therefore, we’ll be learning about writing a friendly letter.  


Please continue to track your child’s nightly reading on their April log.  They will be due on Monday.  A new Log will go home on Monday.


Social Studies:   We will be taking a hiatus from Social Studies.  


Science:   Chapter 4 in our textbooks, “Ecosystems”, will be continued.  On Monday, we will have an open book/notes graded review (quiz) on Lesson 1.  Then, on to Lesson 2!


Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:  We continue Unit 7 this week on “Extending Multiplication and Fractions”.  We’ll focus on multiplying and fractions on a ruler this week.  There will be a short checkpoint quiz on Monday!!

Week of 4/24/17 - 4/28/17

Today marks the halfway point of the third trimester of 3rd grade. Unbelievable! Please make sure to check your child’s grades online.  Open House and Book Fair is Thursday from 6:30 - 8:00.  There are so many exciting projects to behold; I hope you can all come to room 105!!
Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:   Homework is due on or before Friday, 4/28.  Students will also take their test that day.


Reading & Language Arts:  We are continuing  The One and Only Ivan.  We’ll be focusing on continuing the reading and discussion using our Ivan packets. There will be a short quiz on Wednesday using some text about elephants.  No studying is necessary; I just want to see how well my students can comprehend what they read.

Social Studies:   We will be taking a hiatus from Social Studies.  


Science:   Chapter 4 in our textbooks, “Ecosystems”, will be started this week.  We’ll be typing up our vocabulary for lesson 1 into google slides and reading the lesson.



Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:  We begin Unit 7 this week on “Extending Multiplication and Fractions”.  We’ll focus on multiplying this week.  A Parent Letter will be going home today describing this lesson.

Week of 4/17/17 - 4/21/17

We survived PARCC testing!!   Now back to the regular curriculum until the end of the school year.  I hope you all have a wonderful Easter weekend; I’m hoping the weather improves!!

Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:   New word sorts will be going home on Tuesday with a menu for homework.  It will be due on or before 4/28.


Reading & Language Arts:  We are continuing  The One and Only Ivan.  We’ll be continuing the reading and discussion using our Ivan packets. The children are loving the book!


Please continue to track your child’s nightly reading on their April log.  


Social Studies:   This week, we’ll be reading and discussing “Multicultural Chicago” and “Skyscrapers” in our Eyewitness Chicago books.  A study guide will be distributed on Tuesday.  Students may fill it out using their packets, and use it on Test 3 (final) on Friday.  They will not be able to use their packets!   After we read about the skyscrapers, students will be making their own buildings in teams.  These will be put up as a skyline for Open House.  


Science:   We’ll be taking a brief hiatus from Science.


Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Our Unit 6 geometry unit is coming to an end.  A study guide will be going home today and it will be due on Wednesday.  We’ll thoroughly go over all answers on Wednesday.  The Unit 6 test will take place on Thursday.  Then, on to Unit 7 (Extending Multiplication & Fractions.)

Week of 4/10/17 - 4/14/17

It was a little difficult coming back after a wonderful Spring Break, but we all adjusted just fine and completed the Math PARCC tests. We’ll be testing ELA on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and a good snack! Most importantly: Chromebooks needs to be fully charged every night and headphones should be brought to school daily!

Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:   The homework menu will be due on Thursday, April 13.  The test will also be on Thursday.


Reading & Language Arts:  We are continuing  The One and Only Ivan.  We’ll be focusing on continuing the reading and discussion using our Ivan packets.  


Please continue to track your child’s nightly reading on their new April log.  


Our read-aloud book has been Stone Fox.  Ask your child about it!   It’s an oldie, but a goodie.  We’ll be watching the movie and comparing and contrasting the book to the movie later in the week.


Social Studies:   Our “cow stories” are almost complete and we’ve been working on our “cows on parade” as well.  This is an activity that is done totally at school.  I’ve asked the students to peer edit.  I can’t wait to see who’s fault The Great Chicago Fire really was!!  


Science:   We’ll be taking a brief hiatus from Science.


Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Our Unit 6 geometry unit is in full swing.  Area and perimeter will be stressed this week.  Furthermore, there will be a multiplication “mixes” quiz on Wednesday.  We’ll also be making fraction pizzas which you’ll be able to view at Open House.
