Week of 5/28/12 - 6/1/12

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone! We talked about remembering those who gave their lives for our country today. It is amazing to me that this weekend is already here...

Our coming week will be very exciting and busy! Check the dates below for our schedule.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: We are done!!!

English: We will explore prepositions this week.

Reading: The students are finishing up their fantasy novel projects.

Social Studies: For the final week, groups of students will choose a lesson in the text book we haven't been able to cover and present it to the class.

Science: We are done!!!

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Only two more math classes left... I hope my students learned a lot this year and will remember it when they get to 6th grade! It's always a good idea to practice multiplication facts, too!

Week of 5/21/12 - 5/25/12


This will be the final week I will accept book reports. Our reading party will take place on 5/30 for all those students who met their goal. Lots of other important events coming up in the next few weeks; check the dates at the end of this blog.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 33: Pretest Monday, spelling practice HW due Tuesday, workbook pages due Thursday, final test on Friday. THIS IS OUR FINAL SPELLING LESSON!!!!

English: The students will be writing their final persuasive pieces Monday. Furthermore, we are finishing our unit on adverbs this week. A short “quest” will take place on Thursday.

Reading: We will finish our fantasy novels this week. A culminating book project will be assigned later in the week.

Social Studies: Our Chapter 12 test will be on Wednesday. This will be our last formal test in social studies. For the final week, groups of students will choose a lesson in the text book we haven't been able to cover and present it to the class. It should be interesting!!

Science: Lesson 2, “How do the Earth and Moon Compare?” quick study will be Monday. We'll then read, take notes, and have a quick study on lesson 3, which focuses on the rest of the solar system. That quick study will most likely be the final grade for science. Aw, shucks...

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Tree diagrams on Monday, practice test/review on Tuesday, test on chapter 17 Wednesday. We'll then take our last few math days to explore multiplication and division of fractions.

Week of 5/14/12 - 5/18/12

A few items of note for the coming week: We are so lucky to be able to watch the LV musical, Once Upon a Mattress, on Thursday. We will also have a presentation on Friday by John Lynn on his expedition on the Lewis and Clark trail. Check the calendar below for all these important dates.

Remember to check those grades on line! Also, we only have a couple more weeks to complete book reports for our “Book is a Treasure” program.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 32: Pretest Monday, spelling practice HW due Tuesday, workbook pages due Thursday, final test on Friday.

English: We are starting our unit on adverbs this week. Students will be meeting Lolly! We'll also work on writing another persuasive essay.

Reading: We continue our fantasy novel unit. We gathered in “book clubs” to discuss important aspects of each novel and the students really contributed nicely! Our read aloud book Night of the Twisters ended and we will be watching and comparing the movie to the book this week.

Social Studies: Chapter 12 continues this week. We learn about the beginnings of the industrial revolution (lesson 2) and create our own “Fortunately, Unfortunately” booklet as well as a flap book for lesson 3.

Science: Lesson 2, “How do the Earth and Moon Compare?” will be studied this week. We probably won't see a quick study on this lesson until the week of 5/21.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Our math test on chapter 9 (Data) will be on Tuesday. We will then move on to Probability (chapter 17.) There are only 3 lessons so I'll tentatively be testing on 5/22.

Week of 5/7/12 - 5/11/12

The month of May is an exciting month in the fifth grade! We will be visiting Lakeview a couple times for a tour and to see the spring musical. We will also have a presentation by John Lynn on his expedition on the Lewis and Clark trail. Check the calendar below for all these important dates.

Please make sure you are checking your child's grades from time to time. Also, we only have a few more weeks to complete book reports for our “Book is a Treasure” program.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 31: Pretest Monday, spelling practice HW due Tuesday, workbook pages due Thursday, final test on Friday.

English: We will finish the second half of the verbs unit before we review lessons 8-14. Our test on those lessons will be Thursday.

Reading: We continue our fantasy novel unit. We are using 2 novels, The Bridge to Terabithia and The Wish Giver. This week we will gather in “book clubs” to discuss important aspects of each novel.

Social Studies: Chapter 12 begins this week, “Times of Change.” We learn about the beginnings of the industrial revolution and create our own “Fortunately, Unfortunately” booklet.

Science: Chapter 13, “The Earth, Moon, and Beyond” begins this week. Quick
study on Thursday!



Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
We'll start chapter 9 this week, “Statistics and Data.” This chapter includes collecting & organizing data, analyzing graphs, and our old friends: mean, median, & mode.
