Week of January 28, 2008

We had a short but busy week! The students were quite successful on their Skeletal System quiz. We also started our spelling bee, round one, on Friday. We will have another on Monday and then on Friday, 2/1, we will have our fifth grade bee to determine who goes to the district bee. It should be exciting!

Coming up next week:

Spelling: Lesson 16 – Test Friday

Reading: We will conclude our work in the Voices of the Revolution unit of our “Reader” with the story Katie's Trunk. Katie and her family are Loyalists or “Tories.” There will be a comprehension quiz on Tuesday. ISAT practice will round out the week.

Language Arts: We continue writing and editing our 5 paragraph persuasive piece. Ask your child about the hot topic we are writing about! I will supplement with work from our ISAT practice books and the always popular Time for Kids.

Social Studies: We will continue to read and take notes on Chapter 8, The Road to War, specifically Lesson 3. We will learn about "the shot heard round the world" and some of the important battles of the Revolution. In addition we will work on our Patriot/Loyalist booklets. Please remind your child of the importance of this project. I will expect them to do some of it at home. There will be a Chapter 8 test on Friday, 2/1.

Science: We conclude our study of the Skeletal System and are set to begin learning about our multi-talented muscles!

TGFD: We are at the half-way point of our Too Good For Drugs program. I am amazed at how many students forget to do their homework! Please remind your student that I am taking points on the homework and it counts as part of their science grade.

Math: (Mrs. Klacza's math students, only) Students should plan on having a Chapter 7 Geometry test on Tuesday, 1/29. We'll visit the computer lab on Wednesday and do some ISAT practice on Thursday. The study of Measurement and Chapter 11 will begin the following week.

Week of January 21

The cold weather of January is upon us! Please remember to send your child to school with gloves and a hat since we do go out to recess when we can. I hope you all enjoy the Geospace project your child brought home. Ask them about it and why they designed it the way they did. Thank you to Jon's mom and Taylor's mom for assisting with this wonderful, in-school field trip.

We are halfway through the school year. Have you been checking your child's grades on-line?

Coming up next week:

Spelling: Lesson 15 – Test Friday

Reading: We will continue our work in the Voices of the Revolution unit of our “Reader” with the story Katie's Trunk. Katie and her family are Loyalists or “Tories.” It will be interesting to read from the Loyalist point of view since we have been focusing on the Patriot point of view in Social Studies!

Language Arts: We continue writing and editing our 5 paragraph persuasive piece. I will supplement with work from our ISAT practice books and the always popular Time for Kids.

Social Studies: We will continue to read and take notes on Chapter 8, The Road to War. In addition we will work on our Patriot/Loyalist booklets. The Revolutionary War begins!

Science: We continue our study of the bones and joints. Our quiz on the skeleton and the various bones will be on Wednesday.

Math: (Mrs. Klacza's math students, only) We continue the study of Geometry in Chapter 7 this week. Tentative test date: 1/29.

Important Notes:
*Friday's spirit day will be a shirt from a favorite vacation spot
*Martin Luther King's Birthday – 1/21 – Day off for District 66
*Classroom spelling bees: 1/25 and 1/28
*An important notice from the office regarding hot lunch purchases:

FORGOTTEN LUNCHES: Starting in January, 2008 students who do not have a lunch ticket or money will be able to borrow from the office providing there is not an outstanding balance due for lunch tickets. If your child forgets his/her hot lunch ticket or has used them all, he/she may bring $2.25 to school and purchase a ticket that day from the office staff. Students must have exact change to purchase a ticket; no change will be given. If a child has no lunch, no money and the parent cannot be contacted, he/she may borrow from school office, but only twice per trimester. Students will no longer be able to borrow lunch tickets from the lunchroom staff.

Enjoy your 3 day weekend! Mrs. Klacza

Week of January 14

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I hope you all had a fabulous holiday break. We were a little sleepy on Monday morning, but by the afternoon we were our old selves! Did you ask your child about the great time we had at Naper Settlement? Great weather, terrific tour guides, and super activities were all part of the program.

Coming up next week:

Spelling: Lesson 14 – Test Friday. I'd like to comment on how well the students did on the the "skeletal system" words; they really studied because those words were difficult!

Reading: We will continue our work in the Voices of the Revolution unit of our “Reader” and finish the story And then What Happened, Paul Revere? A comprehension quiz will be on Wednesday.

Language Arts: We continue writing our persuasive paragraphs in a group setting. We will critique them and peer edit this week.

Social Studies: We will continue to read and take notes on Chapter 8, The Road to War. In addition we will work on our Patriot/Loyalist booklets. Please ask your child about this very important project.

Science: We continue our study of the human body, particularly bones and joints this week. Do you know where your fibulla or patella is??

Math: (Mrs. Klacza's math students, only) We continue the study of Geometry in Chapter 7 this week. Checkpoint Quiz on Friday! Great website for using protractors:
