Week of 4/29/13 - 5/3/13


We had a wonderful turnout for Open House and everyone was so enthusiastic and excited! Thank you to those who donated books to our classroom from the book fair. It's greatly appreciated. My future son-in-law, a teacher at another school, came to our Open House and said, “I love this school!” I do, too, Matt!!

We'll have MAPs testing on Wednesday and Friday of this coming week. On Wednesday we'll have reading and Friday, Math. Goal setting will occur on Monday. Please make sure your child has a good healthy breakfast and lunch on those days.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 26 – Pretest Monday, Test Friday. HW for “regular” spelling words: Write a story using (at least) 10 of the words and ABC order. HW for “challenge” spelling words: 2 challenge activities.

English: We will continue our unit on personal letter writing. Before you know it, the 2nd graders will be visiting our classroom!

Reading & Social Studies: We will be continuing our study of Egypt!! It's a cross-curricular unit, involving both reading strategies, learned throughout the school year, and lots of interesting social studies activities as well. There will be a vocabulary test on our Egypt words on Monday.

Science: This week, we will continue the very first chapter in our textbook, “Getting Ready for Science.” Especially focused on will be science inquiry tools and skills and the Scientific Method.


Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: This week, we will work on chapter 23 on multiplying by a 1 digit number. There will be a quiz Friday.

Week of 4/22/13 - 4/26/13


Please be advised that Open House and the book fair will take place on Tuesday at 6:30-8:00 p.m. The children were so disappointed with the cancellation yesterday, but so happy today to hear that it will go on!! Let's hope we maintain some dry weather from here on in!!

Monday is Earth Day!   If your child has an Earth Day shirt, this would be the day to wear it.  If not, greens, blues, or any "earthy" color would be fun to wear on Monday.  

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 24 – Pretest Monday, Test Friday. HW for “regular” spelling words: Write a story using (at least) 15 of the words and ABC order. HW for “challenge” spelling words: 2 challenge activities.

English: We will begin our unit on personal letter writing. This all leads to our pen pals project with the second grade! My, has time flown!!

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
Chapter 19 tests will be returned on Monday. We will then begin (and end) a very short chapter 17 on Algebra patterns. Expect a checkpoint quiz on Thursday before we start chapter 23 on multiplying by a 1 digit number.

Week of 4/15/13 - 4/19/13


I enjoyed sitting down with many of my math families; thank you for coming in.
It has been a very short week yet we've been busily completing various projects which will be displayed at Open House. Please make sure you stop in and see it all on Thursday, April 18, from 6:30-8:00!!

Thank you to Mrs. Csorba and Mrs. Warkentien for “popping in” to our classroom on Wednesday with popcorn, pop (7 Up), and many wonderful read-aloud books!! Thank you to the Hermans family for bidding so generously on this auction prize! It was so much fun; we are so lucky...

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 23 – Pretest Monday, Test Friday. HW for “regular” spelling words: Vol. 2 practice book, pp. 193, 194, & 195. HW for “challenge” spelling words: 2 challenge activities.

English: We'll finish our pronouns unit this week, specifically, contractions & there, their, and they're. Unit 6 pronouns test will take place on Thursday, 4/18.

Reading: We will be working with non-fiction texts this week. This will include issues of Time for Kids.

Social Studies: We are getting ready for Open House with all our lovely Chicago projects.

Science: I've pushed back the chapter 10 test to Tuesday, 4/16, because of the 3-day weekend. The study guide is in your child's binder. We'll review, review, review!!



Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: We'll continue chapter 19 on decimals this week. We'll work on comparing decimals, fractions, and money. The test date for this chapter will be Friday, 4/19. I've decided to push the date back a day. We'll review on Thursday.

Week of 4/8/13 - 4/12/13


We'll be having our Auction pizza party today! Thank you to everyone who made it happen!! I'm sure you will be hearing the reviews when your children get home...

This will be a very short week. The students are off both Tuesday and Friday. Remember this is conference week for math teachers/parents.   Also, please get out and vote on Tuesday!

Coming up this week:

Spelling: There will be no spelling due to the shortened week.

English: We'll continue pronouns this week, specifically, object pronouns using I and me, and possessive pronouns.

Reading: We will be working with non-fiction texts this week.

Social Studies: We have finished all our Chicago quizzes. This week we will be finishing our Chicago brochures and our “cows.” The cows will be due on 4/10 and the brochures are due 4/11. Most of it will be done in school; some might have to be finished at home.  

Science: This week we will continue lesson 3 on our solar system by making a planet presentation for open house. I'm planning an open book graded review on this lesson for Monday, April 8. Test date is 4/15.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Monday we will be creating our own “fraction pizzas” which you will be able to view at open house! We're starting our chapter on decimals this week (Ch. 19.) on Wednesday. We'll investigate tenths and hundredths. The tentative test date for this chapter will be 4/18.
