Week of 8/30/10 - 9/3/10

It's hard to believe that summer is almost over and we are in full swing at Prairieview School. We completed our first week and I am happy to report that we have had a wonderful time getting to know each other. I hope your child shared some of the information they learned about me! I will be blogging every week on Friday and will attach it to a weekly email. Feel free to reply if you have any questions or concerns. Let the games begin!!

All 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to sign up for Intramural Games. This is a "free" after school program that allows your child to stay active. Permission slips will be sent out next week. Please return these to Mrs. Cushing by Friday, September 3rd.

Due to a high number of peanut-related allergies in the fifth grade, we are asking that no peanut-based foods be sent to school as a snack. Thank you for your understanding.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 1 pretest will be on Monday. Homework will be assigned on Monday and due on Thursday. Final test is on Friday.

English: The students need to bring in a picture or photograph for an activity on Monday. This is a homework assignment. It should be about the size of a large index card. We will be learning about subjects and predicates this week after we finish the four types of sentences. The students will meet Mr. Morton this week!

Reading: This week we will review and discuss the following reading strategies: predicting, inferring, decoding, clarifying, questioning, evaluating, and summarizing. The students will listen to a read-aloud story entitled The Pumpkin Box to apply these strategies.

Social Studies: We have started our textbook at Chapter 4 entitled "Spain Builds an Empire." Lesson 1 is about the voyages of Columbus. Each student will be writing a letter this week pretending he or she is Columbus and persuading the Queen to allow him/her to return to the new world. We will then begin Lesson 2 which focuses on the Aztecs.

Science: After drawing and describing our own scientists, we will begin diving into our textbooks. Getting Ready for Science is the first chapter covered in our science books. Lesson 1 deals with inquiry tools. We will read the lesson and take notes throughout the week. On Thursday, there will be a short, open note, open book quiz on Lesson 1.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
We begin Chapter 1 which focuses on place value, addition, and subtraction. We will specifically cover place value, rounding whole numbers, and estimating sums and differences this week. I am tentatively planning a test on 9/10 for the first chapter.

Important Dates:
9/6 – Labor Day (no school)
9/7 – Curriculum Night for 4th and 5th grades (6:30-7:30)
9/24 – Teacher Institute (no school)

Have a wonderful weekend! Mrs. Klacza
