Week of 10/1/18 - 10/5/18

Can you believe Sunday is the last day of September?  The year feels like it is
already flying by. In fact, next Friday is our mid point for first trimester.

This week we had a blast celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. The applesauce
was delicious!

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling:  The homework menu and three activities will be due on
or before Friday, October 5. The test will be on that day as well.

Reading & Language Arts:  We’ll continue our first reading unit, Tales as Old
as Time. We’ll be learning about the theme of the story using two
of our favorites, Pigsty and Lost and Found.

Please remember to keep track of your child’s reading (20 minutes, 20 days.)
It is due on Monday. The October Reading Log will be coming home on Monday.

Social Science: We will continue studying about the hemispheres and
the equator this week.  A quiz will occur on Wednesday; there will be
a study guide.
Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Please make sure your child has completed the
study guide/pretest they were given yesterday.  It is due on Monday.
We will go over it entirely and review for the test, which will be on
Tuesday!!   We will then skip Unit 2 (for now) and start Unit 3.  We feel
Unit 3 follows Unit 1 better than 2; we will cover Unit 2 AFTER we finish Unit 3.

Important Dates:
10/8 - Columbus Day (no school)
10/22 - Conference Week

Have a terrific weekend!

Week of 9/24/18 - 9/28/18

Happy Friday everyone! A note is coming home today regarding Johnny
Appleseed’s birthday on Tuesday, September 25. Please make sure you
send your child in with a peeled, cored, sliced apple so we can make our
delicious applesauce!  It can be any kind of apple. The smells in the
third grade wing on Tuesday will be amazing!!!!

I am so thrilled by the amount of signatures I’m seeing in the student planners
every day!  I think it’s a record year!!

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling:  We will have our first spelling test today. On Monday, a new
set of words will be coming home, along with a new homework menu.
The homework will be due on or before October 5.

Reading & Language Arts:
We’ll continue our first reading unit, Tales as Old as Time. We’ll be
learning about Johnny Appleseed and Morty the Meanie this week.

Please remember to keep track of your child’s reading (20 minutes, 20 days)
on the reading log they brought home last week.  They will turn it in on or
before October 1. They could start rolling in next week!

Social Science: Students will be doing some research next week on a
specific continent or ocean. They will use google slides. We’ll then
start studying about the hemispheres and the equator.
Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: This week we’ll be focusing on strategies
and word problems.  We are almost finished with Unit 1.  Our tentative
test date is October 2.

Week of 9/17/18 - 9/21/18

Happy Friday everyone!
A note from Mrs. Cushing:  Third graders see Mrs. Cushing for PE first thing
in the morning.  There is a good chance there will be dew on the grass.
PE is outdoors into October, weather permitting.
The students might get their socks/shoes wet.  It is a good idea for the
third graders to bring an extra pair of shoes and socks for after PE. A
suggestion would be to have your child wear their play shoes to school for PE
and then change into another pair after. Washing and drying them weekly may
be of help too!

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling: The Spelling menu homework will be due on or before Friday, 9/21.
Some activities will require you to initial in the box on the menu.  Some activities
will require work done on a sheet of notebook paper. The test will also be on
Friday the 21st. The test will include 15 words from the student's list
(teacher's choice) and 2 sentences, using any of their 2 words.

Reading & Language Arts:
We’ll start our first reading unit, Tales as Old as Time. The Tortoise
and the Hare will be our next story.

Please remember to keep track of your child’s reading (20 minutes, 20 days)
on the reading log they brought home last week.  They will turn it in on or
before October 1.

On Monday, students will begin presenting their “Me Bags.”   They will
read directly from their 5 paragraph essays.  Please listen to your
child practice; they will be graded on this activity!

Social Science: The quiz on Continents & Oceans is on Tuesday,
9/18. The study guides are in their binders.
Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: This week we’ll be focusing on adding length.
I have downloaded both workbooks onto google classroom (Math.)  If your
child forgets a book at school, the pages can be printed from the site.

Important Dates:

Week of 9/10/18 - 9/14/18

Happy Friday everyone!   I just want to remind you all to check your child’s
assignment notebook (planner) every night and sign it.  This is a handy form of
communication and also a way for your child to get a punch in their punch card!

Coming Up Next Week:

Spelling: The Spelling menu homework will be due on or before Friday, 9/21.
Some activities will require you to initial in the box on the menu. Some activities
will require work done on a sheet of notebook paper.  The test will also be on

We’ll also be continuing our “Me Bag” essays. Final drafts will be typed
this week.

Social Science: Our first graded quiz was a success!  This week, we’ll start a unit
on oceans and continents.  I’m looking at 9/18 as a tentative quiz date for this
information.  There will, of course, be a study guide coming home next week.
Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: This week we’ll be focusing on length, which will include
a fun scavenger hunt on Friday.  There will be a quick checkpoint quiz Wednesday
on addition and subtraction.

I have downloaded both workbooks onto google classroom (Math.)  If your child

forgets a book at school, the pages can be printed from the site.
