Week of 4/30/12 - 5/4/12

This week coming up is the week of tests... We have a social studies AND science test this week. We also have a math quiz AND test. I don't know how it happened, but we seemed to finish everything at the same time! Not only will we be testing in our curriculum, but Monday and Thursday will be our MAP testing days. We discussed ways to improve our winter RIT scores; please talk about this with your child. Easy things you can do are make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast/lunch!!

Don't forget our Book Angels book drive. The fifth graders are in the lead so if you are cleaning out your bookshelves, think of us.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 30: Pretest Monday, spelling practice HW due Tuesday, workbook pages due Thursday, final test on Friday.

English: We will be continuing the second half of the verbs unit with contractions, regular & irregular verbs, and verb phrases with have.

Reading: This week we will start our fantasy novel unit. We are using 2 novels, The Bridge to Terabithia and The Wish Giver. The class will be split in half for this unit but all the students will be participating in book clubs. All the skills covered from the beginning of fifth grade will be used as we enjoy these delightful novels. 

Social Studies: After a review on Monday and Tuesday, our chapter 11 test will be on Wednesday.

Science: Thursday will be the day for our chapter 12 test on oceans!

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: We are finished with our measurement chapter. We have a quiz on lessons 4-8 on Tuesday, review for the entire chapter on Wednesday, and our chapter 22 test on Friday.

Week of 4/23/12 - 4/27/12


Can you believe we only have a little over 6 weeks left of school? Where has this year gone? Let's make it good by working hard and finishing big! Students: keep reading and getting those book reports done!! Parents: please go on-line from time to time and check your child's grades.

We have an early dismissal on Wednesday!

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 29: Pretest Monday, spelling practice HW due Tuesday, workbook pages due Thursday, final test on Friday.

English: Lesson 8 will cover subject/verb agreement There will be a quiz on lessons 1-8 on Tuesday. After we study the rest of the lessons, I will quiz on those.

Reading: We will be looking at how figurative language is used in poetry.  This week we will specifically be looking at poetry that uses onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration, and hyperbole.

Social Studies: We are in the midst of lesson 2 and Thomas Jefferson is the President. We will be studying Lewis & Clark and the Louisiana Purchase this week.

Science: Our Quick Study on lesson 3 will take place on Tuesday. The students will then each create their own ocean floor picture. The chapter 12 test will be on Tuesday, May 1.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Measurement continues this week with customary capactity and mass, elapsed time, and temperature. The quiz on lessons 4-8 will be on Friday. There will be a test on the entire measurement chapter the following week.

Week of 4/16/12 - 4/20/12

It was great seeing so many of you at TGFD graduation and at the Open House/Book Fair. Congrats to John for his “Honorable Mention” award for the Essay Contest through Citizen's Bank!



Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 28: Pretest Monday, spelling practice HW due Tuesday, workbook pages due Thursday, final test on Friday.

English: Lessons 5, 6, & 7 will cover the present, past, and future tense of verbs. This is a very long chapter. Rather than wait until we are done with the entire chapter, I am cutting it in half for testing purposes. There will be a quiz on lessons 1-8 on 4/24. After we study the rest of the lessons, I will quiz on those.

Reading: We will be looking at how figurative language is used in poetry. This week we will specifically be looking at poetry that uses similes, imagery, onomatopoeia, and personification.

Social Studies: This week we will plunge in to chapter 11, “The Young United States.” Our first lesson revolves around Washington as President and then we'll learn about Jefferson and his quest for more land... Our young U.S. needs some elbow room!!

Science: We will be writing notes on lesson 2 (how the oceans move) and taking a quick study on Wednesday.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: This week we leave our world of fractions and study measurement. Customary and metric length will begin the week and then we'll move on to converting linear units. There will be a quiz on the first 3 lessons on Thursday.

Week of 4/9/12 - 4/13/12

We had a great week which included a visit from Bill Bellis, Chief Meteorologist at Fox News. I forwarded the link so you may watch the broadcast earlier today.

I hope to see you all at two important events this week, TGFD graduation on Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. and Open House on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 27: Pretest Monday, spelling practice HW due Tuesday, workbook pages due Thursday, final test on Friday.

English: Lesson 4, linking verbs, will be studied this week. If you think you read this already, you are correct... We never got to it, so it will happen this week!

Reading: This week we conclude our study of China. Our outlines are complete and the students are starting their travel brochures. They are due first thing Thursday morning and there will be time in class for work. We will be watching The Amazing Panda Adventure in conjunction with our good behavior marble party on Friday! Please make sure you sign and return the permission slip coming home on Monday, as the movie is PG rated.

Social Studies: The “Important Books” are due on Tuesday. Our chapter 10 test will be on Wednesday, 4/11.

Science: We have started our unit on oceans and will be conducting an experiment on Monday comparing salt water to fresh water. There will be a lesson 1 quick study on Tuesday and then we will learn about the movement of oceans.


Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Chapter 14, lessons 3, 4, & 5 will be studied this week. It covers addition and subtraction of mixed numbers with renaming! A quiz on Friday the 13th will conclude our week.
