Week of 1/28/13 - 2/1/13


Congratulations to our spelling bee winners, Alexandra and Ben!! They will be competing with the other 3rd grade winners on Monday morning.

We have a busy week coming up: Culture Day on Tuesday and an early dismissal day on Wednesday. Enjoy the snow this weekend; it finally looks like January!

Coming up next week:

Spelling: Pretest on Monday, Lesson 16; test on Friday. Cursive HW due Tuesday. Two challenge activities OR wb page 30 (Vol II) & ABC order due Thursday.

English: Lesson 1, What are Adjectives and Lesson 2, More Adjectives!

Reading: We'll continue our reading skill of Making Connections. Our story Seal Surfer in our basal readers has been read and activities will continue this week. Furthermore, we'll continue our Book Buddies meetings.


Social Studies: Before we start our next chapter, we'll end chapter 3 with Culture Day on Tuesday and and a computer activity on Ellis Island.

Science: We'll continue chapter 14 this week with lesson 3, "How are Light and Color Related?"

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: We'll finish the metric system Tuesday, no math on Wednesday, review on Thursday, Test (chapter 21) on Friday. Please continue to practice those math facts!! A new week of facts will be coming home on Monday. We'll start the testing on the following Monday.

Week of 1/21/13 - 1/25/13


We are halfway through the school year; I am amazed it has gone by so quickly! Please make sure you check your child's 2nd quarter grades.

Monday we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We have talked about this man of peace extensively in the last couple days and how important it is to treat everyone equally and respectfully.

Coming up next week:

Spelling: Pretest on Tuesday, Lesson 15; test on Friday. Cursive HW due Wednesday. Two challenge activities OR wb page 10 (Vol II) & ABC order due Friday (I will extend due to shorter week.)

English: This week, we will start dabbling in our text book and begin adjectives while we work on our autobiographies. Sorry, we didn't get to adjectives last week...


Reading: Our reading skill this week is Making Connections. We will also be learning more about main idea/details. We'll work on these skills as we read the story Seal Surfer in our basal readers. Book Buddies will also begin this week. The students will be paired off and will both read the same novel. They will have to plan out the reading with a calendar over a 2 week time frame. There will also be a packet which is filled out in conjunction with each day's reading.


Social Studies: We are ending chapter 3 with our unit test on Friday, 1/25. Culture day is Tuesday, 1/29. Students will each present something special from their very own culture on that day. They will have 1-3 minutes to do so, and each needs a visual aid. Please refer to the letter and rubric in your child's binder if you are unsure of what is expected.

Science: We'll continue chapter 14 this week with lesson 1, "What Is Heat?"
Lesson 2 ("What is Light?") will be studied toward the end of the week.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: We began the metric system today (chapter 21.) We'll continue next week with length, capacity, and mass. Friday we'll have a “stations review” of the first 4 lessons. Our tentative test date is Friday, 2/1.

Week of 1/14/13 - 1/18/13


Happy New Year and welcome back to “normal.” It was good to get back into a routine and I hope the students are feeling the same way. We have our “Matter Matters” in school field trip on Monday. Scientists will come into our classroom and show us some experiments using matter. It should be fun and interesting!

This is the last week of quarter 2. We are halfway through the school year; I am amazed at how quickly it has gone by!  

Coming up next week:

Spelling: Pretest on Monday, Lesson 14; test on Friday. Cursive HW due Tuesday. Two challenge activities OR wb page 252 (Vol I) & ABC order due Thursday.   Spelling bee practice will be on Thursday.

English: We will start dabbling in our text book this week and begin adjectives while we work on our autobiographies.


Reading: We will be writing an extended responses on Night of the Pufflings. We will also be continuing our lessons on facts and opinions. There will be a fact & opinion quiz on Friday.

Social Studies: We are continuing chapter 3, “People Move from Place to Place” this week. There will be an open book/open notes graded review on Lesson 2 on Tuesday and one on Lesson 3 on Friday. Tentative test date for chapter 3 is Friday, 1/25. Also, be on the lookout for a letter and planning sheet regarding the 3rd grade culture day. Letters will be coming home on Tuesday.

Science: Our chapter 11, Properties of Matter, test is scheduled for Tuesday. We'll start chapter 14 (our next chapter) on Thursday with lesson 1, What Is Heat?


Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: We will not have math on Monday due to our Matter Matters field trip. Tuesday we will “wrap up” chapter 20 with lessons 7 & 8 on problem solving and temperature. We will review the entire chapter on Wednesday and have our test on Thursday. Chapter 21 will follow. We've learned about customary measurement, and now it's on to the metric system!  Please make sure your child is practicing his/her multiplication facts!   Lots of retakes on Monday...
