Week of 9/1/14 - 9/5/14

Happy Friday everyone!  We have had a terrific first week of 3rd grade.  We have really gotten to know each other and I look forward to a wonderful year with my new students!!
Families, please make sure you check my blog weekly; I will put out an email with the link every Friday.  This week, you will need to send in one of your child's t-shirts and a hangar for a fun project linked to Curriculum Night.  Don't worry, you will get it back!! Many students have already done this, but just in case they forgot, it’s due Tuesday.

Curriculum Night for parents only is Wednesday, September 3. at 6:30.   See you then!

Let's make it a great year!!

Coming up the week:
Spelling:  First lesson of the year (Lesson 2) – Pretest Tuesday, Test Friday (unless your child passes the pretest.)  Look for a sheet called “All About Spelling” in the Spelling pocket of your child's binder. (It probably will come home on Tuesday.)  It will explain how we do things here in the third grade. All homework is due on Thursday. Students that are using the “challenge” list will choose 2 activities (another sheet in the binder) and students using the "regular" words will be putting the words in ABC order. All students will practice the words using a cursive sheet they will receive on Tuesday.

Language Arts:  This week, we’ll get to know Ivan, a mighty silverback gorilla.  We’ll be starting our anchor text, The One and Only Ivan.

Also, your child is bringing home a reading log for September.  I expect each child to read for at least 20 minutes for 20 days.   As they read, please initial the sheet.  This activity is part of the LA grade.  It will be worth 10 points.  Read on!!!

We will begin Unit 1 this week, “The Sentence.” There will be homework on days we learn a new lesson. Some students will finish in school but I encourage them to bring it home anyway and go over it again.   Most homework will be from the English workbook.

Social Studies:  We'll focus on directions and the compass rose this week.

Science: We'll briefly start our first unit on ecosystems (Chapter 4) this week.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:  We haven’t officially started our math class yet, but we will  be certainly working on some math topics in homeroom.  I’ll keep you posted on what’s happening in math.

Important Dates:
9/1 - Labor Day, no school
9/3 - Curriculum Night 6:30

Have a great, long weekend!   Mrs. Klacza
