Week of 11/16/09 - 11/20/09

What a crazy week it was with Veteran's Day off; I felt like we had two short weeks! Please get your conference confirmations in as soon as possible. I will be meeting with my homeroom parents in just a couple of weeks; I look forward to it!
Here is some important information regarding yearbooks:
YEARBOOK: Now’s the time to place your orders. Yearbooks are $10.00 and the deadline for your orders is Tuesday, December 1, 2009. No orders will be accepted after that date. Please make checks payable to Lifetouch. Please make sure your student’s name, teacher’s name and grade level are marked on the order form. If you have multiple students, please fill out one for each child. Yearbook order forms went home with your child on November 12th. If your child loses it, you can send an envelope with the following information on it: student’s name, teacher’s name and grade level along with a check made payable to Lifetouch for $10.00. It is very important that you put the information on the envelope; Lifetouch does not know who your child’s teacher is.

Just another reminder that our picture retake day is Thursday, November 19th. Mark your calendars if you are unhappy with your child's picture or if your child was not here the day they were taken.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Thanksgiving words – no pretest. Test Friday.

Reading: We continue inferencing this week and will read the story Chief Joseph to help us perfect this skill. Another full week has come and gone and we ended it with a trip to the Robert Crown Center for our “Michael and Linda” presentation. I happened to sit with the girls and they were wonderful! I heard the boys were equally fantastic!! I was so proud of our fifth graders. Your child will have a booklet in their backpacks explaining what they learned today. Please ask your child about it! We also had a very successful trade fair on Thursday, which goes along with our social studies curriculum. The children were very creative and the trading was fun to watch. I think it was the most successful trade fair I've had so far!
This Wednesday we celebrate Veteran's Day. My dad (now deceased) fought in World War II and I'll bet you all know a veteran or two; make sure you remember to thank him or her for serving our great country. Week of 11/2/09 - 11/6/09

Happy Halloween everyone! The new, improved Halloween festivities were awesome! I'd like to thank all those parents who helped organize everything; in our classroom it was Mrs. Gibbons and Mrs. Meyer who handled the activities, and Mrs. Moschetto, Mrs. Laviste, and Mrs. O'Leary who sent in the yummy treats and drinks. The children really enjoyed creating their pumpkin works of art! It's always fun, also, seeing so many parents outside watching our crazy costume parade!!

Our picture retake day has been moved to Thursday, November 19th. Mark your calendars! We will also be hosting Mr. Laviste for Junior Achievement for one last day on Wednesday. Ask your child what he/she learned! Our Robert Crown field trip is this Friday. Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour this weekend!

We have a four-day week coming up and some exciting changes to the typical Halloween party, as you all know. Please make sure your child is planning what his/her pumpkin is going to look like. Items may be brought in from home for decorating purposes. We are not carving them nor are we painting them, but if there is something that might be fun to add, bring it in! Our party moms are ready to go!!

Also, picture retakes are scheduled for Thursday, Nov 5. Pictures should be coming home soon and if you decide to have your child retake the picture, the entire envelope must be returned by that day. Any students that were out sick that day will also be photographed.

Social Studies: Chapter 6 entitled “Life in the English Colonies” will begin this week. We'll start with “Working and Trading” and I will be introducing the Trade Fair this week. Students will be expected to create an item that they can trade with other classmates. The items should be inexpensive and use materials found at home. Some traded goods I've seen in the past have been bookmarks, bracelets, muffins (healthy, of course,) painted rocks, handmade comic books, etc. We will discuss it in class; look for a permission slip mid-week.

Science: Lesson 2 (Ecosystems) continues... We are a little behind due to the amount of sick kids missing; we will, hopefully, finish up that lesson this week.

Happy Columbus Day Weekend!
I have noticed that many of my students' binders are chock-full of papers they do not need anymore. Furthermore, there are some important graded assignments that need to be looked at inside the various pockets. Please help your child make a habit of going through their binders every day and pulling out the papers that need to stay home. We are also working very hard to make sure assignments books are filled out properly each day.

On Tuesday, I will be sending home a permission slip for our parent workshop on October 28 and the subsequent Robert Crown field trip on November 6. Oncoming puberty and the human reproductive system will be introduced in a very sensitive way at that time. Please look in those binders for this most important permission slip.

Thank you to all the families that purchased magazines during our magazine drive. We started Junior Achievement this week and the students are learning how to become entrepreneurs. Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
After a very successful study of chapter 2, we are going to work on three lessons in Chapter 3: dividing by 1 digit divisors, interpreting the remainders, and zeroes in division. After the three lessons are finished, we will have a quiz on Thursday. Where did the week go? In the blink of an eye, Friday is here and I am writing my blog. Next week also starts the fabulous month of October. Amazing... Social Studies: We continue to read about and discuss Jamestown. The students will be making a Jamestown study guide before we begin Lesson 3, “The First Colonies.”

Science: Our test on the very first Science chapter will be on Wednesday. We will play a review game on Tuesday. I then plan on starting Chapter 5 on energy and ecosystems.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
I am very pleased with the progress the students have made on their mad minutes (2 minutes, actually!) Many have already met their goal. It is so important that they know their multiplication facts, especially since we are doing multi-digit multiplication. I have included some websites your child might want to visit to practice their facts using e-flash cards. There will be a quiz on Lessons 4-6 on Tuesday followed by a Chapter 2 test on Thursday. The students may use their notes on Tuesday, but not on Thursday.
