Week of 10/12/09 - 10/16/09

Happy Columbus Day Weekend!
I have noticed that many of my students' binders are chock-full of papers they do not need anymore. Furthermore, there are some important graded assignments that need to be looked at inside the various pockets. Please help your child make a habit of going through their binders every day and pulling out the papers that need to stay home. We are also working very hard to make sure assignments books are filled out properly each day.

On Tuesday, I will be sending home a permission slip for our parent workshop on October 28 and the subsequent Robert Crown field trip on November 6. Oncoming puberty and the human reproductive system will be introduced in a very sensitive way at that time. Please look in those binders for this most important permission slip.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 7, soft and hard G. Test Friday.

Reading: We have finished reading The Kid in the Red Jacket and will be working on a book project this week. Furthermore, there will be a vocabulary quiz on the important words from the novel on Tuesday.

Language Arts: We are studying quotation marks and will use comic strips to help us learn to use them properly early in the week. If your child has a favorite comic stip, please send one in on Tuesday. We will then move on to abbreviations and titles. After reviewing for a couple days, I am planning a Unit 5 test on Wednesday, 10/21.

Social Studies: We have finished the reading of Chapter 5 and will “jigsaw” many of the important aspects of the chapter on Tuesday. After reviewing on Wednesday and Thursday, the students can plan on a chapter test on Friday. Look out for the “How to Study” sheet!

Science: I hope the children go on leaf hunts this weekend! They should be rinsing, drying, and pressing them according to the directions they received yesterday. We will be making leaf animals on Wednesday. I encourage them to look for leaves of all sizes.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
We are finished with our short but sweet long division chapter and will move on to Algebra and Chapter 4. This week, we will specifically focus on expressions, equations, and properties. I can already predict a short, open-note quiz on Tuesday, 10/20.

Important Notes:
10/12 – Columbus Day (no school)
10/21 – Early dismissal
10/29 – Halloween celebrations
10/30 – Teacher's Institute (no school)

Have a great, long weekend! Mrs. Klacza
