Week of 1/4/10 - 1/8/10

I'd like to thank the PTO for providing us with a wonderful lunch on Wednesday and a fabulous appetizer spread on Thursday for the cookie exchange. Also, thank you to all the parents who baked cookies and provided those wonderful appetizers for the cookie exchange. My family was thrilled with all the delicious treats I brought home.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday season – stay safe and enjoy your families; I will be enjoying mine!

Please be advised of the following important announcement from the office: as of January 4, 2010 there will be a price increase in the student hot lunch program. The price of hot lunch will be $2.50 per meal.

Coming up the week after the holiday break (Jan. 4 – Jan. 9):

Spelling: Lesson 14, more prefixes and roots/pretest Monday; test Friday.

Reading: We start a new reading skill this week, clarifying. We will start with the short story entitled Volcanoes. At the end of the week, we should be ready to begin our novel, Toliver's Secret. This novel, set during the American Revolution, ties in nicely with our current social studies unit.

Language Arts: We'll continue our verbs unit with present, past, and future tenses.

Social Studies: We will begin Chapter 8, "The Road to War," this week. There are some problems in the colonies regarding taxes. War is on the horizon. This is the start of some very exciting social studies lessons!

Science: Lesson 3 will be concluded this week and I have a tentative Chapter 6 test set for 1/13.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:

Our plan is to start Chapter 11 this week which involves divisibility rules, finding multiples, and LCM (least common multiple.)

Important Notes:
12/18 – Winter Break begins at 2:25!!
1/18 – Martin Luther King's birthday, no school

Have a great holiday break! Mrs. Klacza

Week of 12/14/09 - 12/18/09

I'm happy to say that our adopted family received lots of wonderful gifts from our class. They will be very happy on Christmas morning! Can you believe that we are entering the final week before Christmas break? It is also the last school week of 2009. And what a wonderful week it will be...

Coming up this week:

Spelling: The words this week will be holiday words. There will not be a lesson from the spelling book and no pretest; we will be doing a word search and writing sentences using those words.

Reading: After editing our extended responses and writing our final copies for Eye of the Storm, we will take a ride on The Polar Express. There will be activities that go along with the book.

Language Arts:
We'll continue our verbs unit with helping verbs and linking verbs.

Social Studies: After finishing up lesson 3 on Monday and Tuesday, we will review on Wednesday with a Chapter 7 test on 12/17.

Science: We will reread Lesson 2 of Chapter 6 on Monday and have an open book assessment on Tuesday. This week we will also watch a US Streaming video on the rebirth of a forest.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
Since we won't have math the latter part of the week, I'd rather not start the next chapter until we return from holiday break. We will do ISAT practice and throw in some other fun activities, also.

Important Notes:
12/14 – Cadet band concert and Choir at LV 7:00
12/17 – Bowling trip in a.m. (snack bar will be open – please do not sent too much money with your child :)
12/18 – Cadet band concert and Choir at PV in the a.m.

Week of 12/7/09 - 12/11/09

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday. It's time to start decorating for the next big holiday! It was a pleasure getting to know you all better at conferences and finding out how we can work together to make the school year a success for your child.

Also, please don't forget our adopted family. We will only be collecting gifts until Tuesday. Canned goods for the Lions Club will be collected through 12/11.

Coming up this week:

Spelling: Lesson 13 – negative prefixes -- Test Friday

Reading: We will continue our current reading skill, self-questioning, this week. We have read Eye of the Storm and will answer some comprehension questions. The students will also write 10 true and false questions using the text and have them answered by a classmate. Our reading party will occur on Monday. We will watch the movie Wall-E and have some healthy treats.

Language Arts: We will start our Verbs unit with a School House Rock video. Action verbs and direct objects will be studied this week.

Social Studies: After reading about the Spanish settlers in the southwest and Florida, this week we will focus on the French and their explorations down the Mississippi River. We will then study the French and Indian War. I'd like to wrap this chapter up with a test on 12/17.

Science: We read The Great Fuzz Frenzy and began the adaptations project. Ask your child about it! On Tuesday, we will read Wolf Island. An open book quiz on Lesson 1 will occur on Wednesday and we will then begin to read and discuss Lesson 2.
