Week of 8/31/15 - 9/4/15

Happy Friday everyone!  We have had a terrific first week of 3rd grade.  We have really gotten to know each other and I look forward to a wonderful year with my new students!!
Families, please make sure you check my blog weekly; I will put out an email with the link every Friday.  Next week, you will need to send in one of your child's t-shirts and a hangar for a fun project linked to Curriculum Night.  Don't worry, you will get it back!!

Curriculum Night for parents only is Thursday, September 3, at 6:30.   See you then!

Let's make it a great year!!

This is from Mrs. Cushing:  Kids in Action:  Kids in Action is a way of having your child show their classmates and myself and the school what type of activities they do outside of school.  I am asking the third graders to bring in ONE picture of themselves performing some kind of physical activity they like to do.  This picture will be displayed for others to see.  If your child would like to do this, please have the picture in by September 4th.  Fourth and fifth graders will have the chance to do this later in the year.

Third graders see me FIRST thing in the morning.  Chances are there will be dew on the grass.   It is a good idea for the third graders to bring an extra pair of shoes and socks for after PE.

Coming up this week:
Spelling:   We are starting a brand new spelling series this year called Words Your Way.  Fortunately, the students have worked with this program in 2nd grade, so they can help me!!  I took an inventory today and the students will be working with patterns they struggle with during Word Work in Daily 5.

Language Arts:  I’ll be introducing Close Reading this week using a poem called The Field Mouse.  Students will also be starting Daily 5.

On Tuesday, Students will receive a September Log to keep track of their daily reading.  This will count as part of their ELA grade.  I expect 20 days of reading a month (at least) for about 20 minutes, done at home.  I’ll explain this to the children on Tuesday.   It’s super easy!

Social Studies:  We’ll be starting the year with directions.   There will be a quiz on Friday, 9/4.  A study guide will go home on Tuesday.

Science:   We won’t be starting science for a couple of weeks.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:  I’ll be meeting my new math students on Monday.  Our new series is called Bridges and will include a Number Corner session daily.  It will be fun to explore this new math series with my new group of kids.  See you all soon!!

Important Dates:

9/3 - Curriculum Night (parents only)
9/7 - Labor Day (no school)
9/24 - Early Dismissal (11:00)

Have a great weekend!
