Week of 4/27/09 - 5/1/09

After a chilly start to the week, it looks like Spring has finally arrived in full force!
Let's all try to keep our “spring fever” in check and continue to learn, study, and do well as the year winds down. I hope to see some parents tonight at “Kicks on 66” at the Cornerstone. It should be a great event! Also, I'd like to make a last pitch for family reading night next Wednesday evening.

Coming up this week:

Mrs. Klacza's Reading Class:

Spelling: Lesson 29: Compound words - Test on Friday.

Reading: We continue reading our novel Night of the Twisters. Our book clubs have been a big success. A book project will be started at the end of the week and we will conclude the unit by watching the movie on 5/4. We will then compare and contrast the novel and the movie.

Language Arts: The chapter 6 test on Pronouns will occur on Wednesday. We will review before the test. Then we will be on to Adverbs!! We'll meet Lolly...

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:

We continue Chapter 22 and all forms of measurement. Students should be prepared for an exam the week of 5/4.

Mrs. Klacza's Homeroom:

Social Studies: The chapter entitled “The Young U.S.” will be concluded this week. Monday we'll read about the War of 1812 and take some notes. We'll review on Wednesday and take the test on Thursday.

Science: After an open book assessment on Tuesday, we will start the study of oceans later in the week.

Important Notes:

4/24 – Early Dismissal
4/29 – Family Book Club night (please consider coming)

Have a great weekend! Mrs. Klacza

Week of 4/20/09 - 4/24/09

It was wonderful to see so many families at our TGFD graduation on Monday. The children worked very hard and learned many valuable strategies for resisting peer pressure. We are still collecting non-perishable food for our PV food drive. Please think about sending in a few items.

Wow, what a turnout for the Open House/Book Fair! I always enjoy seeing my students get excited about their classroom and their displayed work. Thank you all for stopping by~

Coming up this week:

Mrs. Klacza's Reading Class:

Spelling: Lesson 28: “Greek combining forms” - Test on Thursday.

Reading: We continue reading our novel Night of the Twisters. Book clubs have been introduced and we will continue meeting and discussing the book.

Language Arts: Chapter 6 on Pronouns has been started. This week we will cover I & Me, possessive pronouns, and contractions with pronouns. I'm considering 4/29 for a test on pronouns.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:

We will put fractions to rest for awhile... hooray!! Chapter 22, measurement, will begin. We will discuss customary and metric units of measurement.

Mrs. Klacza's Homeroom:

Social Studies: The chapter entitled “The Young U.S.” has been started. Our nation is growing and we need a little “elbow room.” We will find out how Thomas Jefferson solved that problem starting in Lesson 2: “Jefferson Looks West.”

Science: We continue our study of weather and the water cycle.

Important Notes:
4/24 – Early Dismissal
4/24 - Fundraiser at Cornerstone

Week of 4/13/09 - 4/17/09

After a wonderful spring break, it was nice to return with recharged batteries and get down to business! We are in the “home stretch” now with only a couple months of school left so it's important for all of us to work hard and stay focused.

Parents, please remember our TGFD graduation on Monday. It would be great to get a big turnout to show support for this program and our children who worked hard and truly took it seriously. It will begin at 8:45 in the gym here at PV.

Also, please think about cleaning out your pantries and donating non-perishable food to our PV food drive. There are many families who need a little extra help during this economic crisis and we 5th grade families can easily help them by donating a few items. (We are also competing against the other two grades!!)

Have a wonderful Easter weekend, everyone!

Coming up this week:

Mrs. Klacza's Reading Class:

Spelling: Lesson 26 - review lesson. Test on Friday. There will not be a pretest this week; everyone will take the Friday test.

Reading: We continue reading our novel Night of the Twisters. I will introduce the book clubs this week. Students will continue answering questions in their “twister” journals.

Language Arts: We continue and complete our Me Front Page activity with visits to the computer lab to type using the Publisher program. As I mentioned last week, this activity utilizes many writing skills we've been using throughout the year: expository, narrative, poetry, quotations, using the third person, etc., etc. At the end of the week, we will start our next English chapter on Pronouns.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:

We will complete chapter 14 this week. After much review on Wednesday, I'm planning on giving the students a “quest” on Thursday. Please notice that only Lessons 3, 4, & 5 have been covered. The lessons were specifically about adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Mrs. Klacza's Homeroom:

Social Studies: Our Chapter 10 test will be on Tuesday. We will review on Monday. Chapter 11, “The Young U.S.” will be started. Our nation is growing and we need a little “elbow room.” We will find out how Thomas Jefferson solved that problem!
