Week of 4/3/17 - 4/7/17

After school today we begin Spring Break!   Have a wonderful, relaxing break and be safe!  The week after Spring Break starts our PARCC testing.  We’ll be testing Math the first week and ELA the following.  Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and a good snack!   Most importantly: Chromebooks need to be fully charged every night and earphones should be brought to school daily!
Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:   New word sorts will be going home on Monday, April 3.  The homework menu will be due on Thursday, April 13.

Reading & Language Arts:  We are continuing  The One and Only Ivan.  After Spring Break, we’ll be focusing on continuing the reading and discussion using our Ivan packets.

March reading logs will be due on Monday, April 3.

Social Studies:   We continue reading about the beautiful city of Chicago.  This week we’ll focus on writing a story from Mrs. O’Leary’s cow’s point of view!!   There will be a test on the second portion of our Eyewitness Chicago packets on Wednesday, April 5.  Packets and books may be used during this test.

Science:   We’ll be taking a brief hiatus from Science.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Our Unit 6 geometry unit is in full swing.    We’ll be taking our PARCC tests the week we get back.  We finished our “times” tests, but there will be one more to take the week of 4/10:


a mix times test.

Week of 3/20/17 - 3/24/17

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  "May the road rise up to meet you and the wind be always at your back…" Enjoy your weekend!
We are coming up to the final week before Spring Break.  It’s also Spirit Week!! AND, we are visiting the Shedd Aquarium on Friday!!  Please make sure your child brings a totally disposable lunch/brunch on that day.  We’ll be eating super early, 10:00 a.m., (this is the only time we could get into the Shedd lunchroom) so students don’t need a morning snack since we won’t have time to eat it here at school.  We are so lucky to be able to see our beautiful city and take in the Shedd for free!   
Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:   Spelling HW (Menu 4) is due on Friday, 3/24.  However, the test will be on Thursday, 3/23, due to the field trip.


Reading & Language Arts:  We’ve started  The One and Only Ivan and the children are very excited about it!  This week, we’ll be focusing on continuing the reading and discussion using our Ivan packets.  


March reading logs will be due after Spring Break.


Social Studies:   We continue reading about the beautiful city of Chicago.  This week we’ll focus on rebuilding the city after the Great Chicago Fire. The Chicago Fire flip books are due on Monday!!   We’ll then be starting our brochure project.  


Science:   We’ll be taking a brief hiatus from Science.


Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Our Unit 6 geometry unit is in full swing.    This week we’ll focus on quadrilaterals and other polygons.  A x12 test will occur on Thursday!!

Week of 3/13/17 - 3/17/17

Don’t forget to set your clocks an hour ahead on Saturday night!  Spring is almost here… Why doesn’t it feel that way?   Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!
Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:  New word sorts are going home on Monday.  Students will also get their new homework menu.  They should choose one activity from each column and one more from any column they choose.  It will be due on or before 3/24.

Reading & Language Arts:  We’ll be starting our final unit of study focusing on “Standing up for what you believe in.”  The wonderful novel The One and Only Ivan will be used as our anchor text.  

March reading logs will be due after Spring Break.

Social Studies:   We continue reading about the beautiful city of Chicago.  This week we’ll focus on the Industrial Boom and the Great Chicago Fire.  We’ll start our Chicago Fire flap books this week.  

Science:   We’ve wrapped our our Space unit, however, this week we’ll be creating our very own “postcards from Space.”

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Our Unit 6 geometry unit is in full swing.    This week we’ll focus on creating polygons on geoboards and with toothpicks.  There will be a checkpoint quiz on 3/17 on polygons and quadrilaterals.  The 11’s will also be tested on that same day.

Week of 3/6/17 - 3/10/17

That old saying about the month of March, “In like a lion, out like a lamb” really holds true!  However, after that amazing January and February, I’m ok with it!! My third graders are starting today to recite the pledge and PV pact for the entire school!! They are very excited. Today also marks the end of Trimester 2. Grades will be updated and completed soon.
Coming up Next Week:
Spelling:  The Menu homework is due on or before Friday.  There will also be a test on that day.


Reading & Language Arts:  We’ll be focusing on our Chicago unit (cross curricular with Social Studies.)  We’ll also focus on comprehension skills using various literature pieces.


March reading logs have gone home.  They will be due after Spring Break.


Social Studies:   We continue reading about the beautiful city of Chicago.  This week we’ll focus on the founding of Chicago, the waterways, and the Industrial Boom.  There will be an open book quiz on what we’ve learned so far on Thursday.  Students are invited to use their Eyewitness Chicago packet and a book, if necessary.


Science:   We’ll be finishing up our Space unit (Chapter 10) this week.   The date for the Chapter 10 Science test is Wednesday, March 8.  We’ll review on Tuesday.  No books or notes allowed for this one!   A study guide comes home today.




Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:  Unit 6 begins on Monday.  This is a Geometry unit.  We’ll be learning about the attributes of a rectangle, making shape posters, and creating tangrams this week.  Watch out for a parent letter coming home on Monday regarding this unit.
