First of all, Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. I hope you are pampered and treated with the respect you deserve!

I'd like to thank you all for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week. The food that some of you made for our breakfast (Tuesday) and lunch (Thursday) was outstanding! All the lovely wishes and tokens were greatly appreciated, also.

There are a lot of exciting things coming up for the 5th graders. The first occurs this Thursday and is our 5th grade celebration. There will be games followed by a pizza lunch. After lunch, we will be heading over to Lakeview to catch a sneak preview/dress rehearsal of their musical, Fiddler on the Roof. It should be a great day! Remember there is an early dismissal on Friday (11:00.)

Coming up this week:

Mrs. Klacza's Reading Class: We have begun The Wish Giver, which is in the fantasy genre. The first story is called “Jug-a-Rum” and our activities will revolve mostly around this tale. We will particulary focus on story structure, character traits, and figurative language, especially colloqualism.

Spelling: Lesson 28 – Pretest on Tuesday; Homework due on Friday/Test on Friday. (notice the change in days)

English: We'll finish up adverbs and prepositions this week and conclude with a test on Friday. Our final lesson is called “Adverb or Preposition?”

Social Studies: We will start Chapter 12 this week called “Times of Change.” The United States is 50 years old and we will learn about the Industrial Revolution and meet some inventors like Eli Whitney and Robert Fulton.

Science: We will begin our next science chapter on oceans this week. We will do an interesting experiment on the temperature of salt water vs. fresh water.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class: Students should be prepared to take a test on Monday on measurement, chapter 22. We will then begin chapter 9 on mean, median, and mode.
