Week of 1/19/09 - 1/23/09

I am thrilled that we were able to come to school every day this snowy, frigid week. We must remember to thank our wonderful bus drivers for bringing our children to school safely during this harsh winter.

Our week will be a short one. Monday we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Tuesday will be very exciting as we come to school dressed in red, white, and blue. A new phase begins with the inauguration of Barack Obama. I plan to stream the inauguration ceremonies into my classroom during reading.

Stay warm this weekend! And... coming up this week:

Mrs. Klacza's Reading Class:

Spelling: Lesson 16: silent h words. Test on Friday.

Language Arts: We are taking a text book break. We will begin learning about expository writing. Students will choose a prompt and plan their writing. Rough drafts will be written and the final copy will be handed in the following week.

Reading: We begin a new reading skill this week with “clarifying.” The story we will cover in our textbooks is called Volcanoes. Next week, we will begin reading a novel.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
After a day of review (Tuesday,) we will have our quiz on Wednesday. The quiz will cover Chapter 11, Lessons 1-4 only. We have learned about least common multiples (LCM,) divisibility, greatest common factors, and prime/composite numbers.

Mrs. Klacza's Homeroom:

Social Studies: We continue work on the “I am the Patriot, I am the Loyalist” book project. We will visit the lab from time to time to type up our rough drafts. This week, Lesson 2 will be concluded as we read about the Intolerable Acts and the Continental Congress.

Science: After reading The Great Fuzz Frenzy the students were asked to create their own story boards which will resemble the book. These are due on Wednesday, 1/21. We will continue by studying symbiosis. Wolf Island will be read and discussed on Friday. Quiz on Lesson 1 will be on 1/27.

Important Notes:
* 1/19 MLK birthday; fundraiser at Home Run Inn
* 1/20 Spirit day - wear red, white, and blue for inauguration day
* 2/4 Naper Settlement field trip

Have a great weekend! Mrs. Klacza
