Week of 9/6/10 - 9/10/10

We have completed our first full week of curriculum work. I have already added some grades, so please make sure to check your child's grades frequently. Curriculum night is Tuesday, September 7th from 6:30-7:30. The presentation will begin in the multipurpose room with Mrs. Schultz. You will have an opportunity to sign up for first trimester conferences in our classroom.

Coming up this week:

Spelling:
Lesson 2 pretest will be on Monday. Homework will be assigned on Monday and due on Thursday. Final test on Friday.

English: We will continue to learn about simple subjects and simple predicates. Did you know that in an imperative sentence, the subject is always “you?” Mr. Morton helped us with subjects and on Friday we will take a trip to Conjunction Junction. Ask you child about it!

Reading: This week in reading we will be focusing on context clues. The students will learn how to identify words within the context of a story.

Social Studies: We will finish our lesson on the Aztecs and the Spanish conquistadors by listing the advantages each had in battle. Lesson 3 “Life in New Spain” will then be read and discussed. A test on Chapter 4 will be on Friday, 9/17. We will complete a “How to Study” sheet prior to the test to help the students study properly.

Science: We are still in the "Getting Ready for Science" chapter and will read and discuss Lessons 2 & 3 this week on inquiry skills. There will be a test on Chapter 1 on Thursday, 9/16.

Mrs. Klacza's Math Class:
I have really been enjoying my math class! The students have been getting their homework done and asking good questions, when necessary. This week we will review, review, review! After some problem solving using the “working backward” method, the students will take a practice “pretest” which we will grade together. This will give them a good idea what they need to study and what they already know pretty well. The chapter 1 test will be Thursday.

Important Dates:
9/6 – Labor Day (no school)
9/7 – Curriculum Night for 4th and 5th grades (6:30-7:30)
9/24 – Teacher Institute (no school)

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend! Mrs. Klacza
